Un aeropuerto. No uno de esos de las grandes urbes en los que un gusano de metal conecta el refrigerante avión a las salas climatizadas del aeropuerto para que el pasajero no tenga que enfrentarse al clima real, sino uno de aquellos, ubicados en ciudades pequeñas, en los que el viajero tiene que apearse del avión y caminar por la pista de aterrizaje hacia una diminuta terminal desprovista de boutiques de diseñador y cafeterías de cadena.

Caminaba junto con el resto de los pasajeros en busca de una puerta por la que pudiera ingresar al aeropuerto cuando algo parecido a un guiño me hizo mirar al piso. Era el aleteo de una pequeña mariposa blanca. Desvié el pie para no pisarla y mi zapato cayó sobre otra igual. Solo que esa estaba muerta. A éstas las rodeaban otras muchas también muertas. Miré a mi alrededor. El camino del avión a la puerta por la que se entraba a la terminal estaba alfombrado por mariposas blancas muertas o agonizantes. También tapizaban las paredes grises del edificio. Muchas otras revoloteaban nerviosas. Eran tal vez cientos de miles (los insectos como los astros requieren de cifras que rebasan nuestra imaginación). Me sorprendió no haberlas visto antes y más que los demás no repararan en ellas. Caminé con cuidado, intentando no pisar a aquellas vivas o moribundas. Nadie más parecía tomar esas precauciones.

El aeropuerto era modesto: una única sala de espera y dos bandas para recoger el equipaje. El suelo de la terminal también estaba cubierto de fragmentos de mariposas; algunas morían tras entrar por las puertas que se abrían y cerraban sin cesar, las más habían sido arrastradas por los pies y el equipaje de mano. Dentro ya era difícil ver una mariposa completa: casi todo eran alas, cuerpos y apéndices sucios y rotos.

Me paré junto a la banda para esperar mi maleta: me urgía irme de ahí. Tras un sordo bramido, la banda comenzó a moverse. Las maletas que empezaron a aparecer, alimentadas desde el exterior, tenían pegadas mariposas blancas: conté hasta seis en una sola. Los propietarios las tomaban sin preocuparse por los insectos y echaban a andar hacia la calle llevándolas con ellos. Algunas mariposas no aterrizaban en el equipaje sino en la banda transportadora, constituida por discos que se desplazaban girando sobre sus ejes; éstas eran en su mayoría despedazadas por las maletas al ser colocadas o retiradas, otras se posaban en los discos que al girar las desmembraban. Una voló desde una maleta Louis Vuitton de imitación hasta posarse en el borde de la banda, de manera que cada disco que pasaba la golpeaba. La mariposa blanca intentaba con todas sus fuerzas incorporarse, pero cada nuevo esfuerzo era sucedido por un disco que la embestía. Tras algunos segundos de agónica lucha, finalmente se soltó para desaparecer entre dos discos. Triturada. Algunas pocas lograban emprender el vuelo y se posaban en el techo o en una pared, solo para minutos después regresar a la banda o al suelo.

Miré a la gente que me rodeaba: sesenta o setenta personas eran testigos de miles de muertes simultáneas y a nadie parecía resultarle trágico o al menos digno de asombro. Ni siquiera en los niños encontré un atisbo de compasión. Tal vez entendían que ese era el ciclo de la vida y que preocuparse es vano. Lo cierto es que me era inevitable ver un presagio en aquella masacre marcada con la inconfundible ironía bíblica: una infinidad de mariposas terminaba su vuelo en un aeropuerto. Justo en el aeropuerto al que yo había volado para huir de ciertos recuerdos que insisten en revolotear a mi alrededor. Como mariposas blancas.
